  2. LEARN Resource Center to Hold 2nd Annual Backpack Giveaway

New Haven, IN (July 23, 2020) –Over 750 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade will benefit this year from receiving a free backpack filled with school supplies through the 2nd Annual Ready-to-LEARN Backpack Giveaway held by LEARN Resource Center. Through a recent donation of 384 additional backpacks by Beacon Federal Credit Union, LEARN needs help filling those bags with school supplies.

3Rivers Federal Credit Union again kicked off the backpack and school supplies drive with a donation of over 160 backpacks. Costco is also donating 200 backpacks filled with supplies. Over the past several weeks, SDI LaFarga, PHP, Murphy Insurance, Hockemeyer Family Eye Care, Grier Enterprises, Milan Center Feed & Grain, and a number of community members have made monetary and school supply donations. Even with all the generous donations already received, with the addition of 384 backpacks, LEARN is in a time crunch to get bags filled.

The backpack giveaway will be held on Monday, August 3rd from 5-7 PM at New Haven Intermediate School (919 Homestead Drive, New Haven). To receive a backpack, children must be in the vehicle. Most backpacks will include a face mask, hand sanitizer, pencil box/pouch, pencils, erasers, crayons, glue sticks, folders, spiral notebook/loose leaf paper pack. Additional items for upper elementary grades include colored pencils, highlighters/markers, and more.

Sharon Wilson, Executive Director said, “We know that COVID-19 has impacted so many families financially that we decided to move forward with holding our Ready-to-LEARN backpack giveaway again this year to help alleviate some of the costs for kids to return to school. This year, we’ve made it a drive-thru pick-up to eliminate families from having to stand in line. Whether children are attending school in class or online, they will still need school supplies. As one of the only organizations giving away backpacks this August, we want to give away as many as we can. We live in such a generous community that I believe we could giveaway 1,000 backpacks with supplies.”
